The first century Churches of Christ received the mission to “go therefore and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:19 KJV. South Augusta Church of Christ did just that. With the support of Garnett Road Church of Christ in Tulsa Oklahoma, the South Augusta Church of Christ had its first meeting on 29 June 1983 at the Masters Inn on Washington Road in Augusta GA. Marvin Green was the Evangelist and Earl Anderson was the youth minister. Ten families, including their children were in attendance. Soon after, in July 1983, the Church met at the Martinez Community Center. Although only there for a few months, the Church began to grow. On Sunday, September 4, 1983, God created an opportunity for the Church to hold its first service at Morgan Road Middle School in Hephzibah, GA which borders Augusta GA. As the church grew, Earl Anderson became the Associate Minister.
In March 1990, the Evangelist Marvin Green and his wife Kathy left Augusta Georgia and moved to Kansas to help head-up another congregation and Earl Anderson became the leading Evangelist with Mike McCormick becoming the Associate Evangelist. Seven years later, Kenny Chavous became the youth minister. We continued to worship at Morgan Road Middle School through December 1995 with our offices located in the Forest Ridge subdivision off Morgan Road. Our baptistery was a horse “trough” but we continued to grow. Eventually, the church acquired a building on five acres of land with offices and a baptistery that was previously owned by a Baptist congregation. We moved to 4149 Daisy Lane for full-time worship on Wednesday, January 3rd, 1990.
Over time, leadership changed. In 2002, Kenny Chavous became the Associate Evangelist under Earl Anderson. Shortly after, in 2003, the Church began its first building project which is now our current worship building with three offices and a baptistery. The parking lot was expanded, and trees were planted. The original building from 1990 is still utilized and has classrooms, a kitchen, and a fellowship hall. We also restructured the old nursery and changed it into the clothing room. The first service in our current building was on February 29, 2004.
Over the years, the Church continued preaching the gospel and adding souls to Christ. In 2020, the Corona virus global pandemic changed the way many Christians worshiped. Though sickness, quarantine and closures threatened the Church’s ability to worship all over the world, South August Church of Christ in Augusta Georgia remained opened. In 2022, Earl Anderson retired, making Kenny Chavous our lead Evangelist.
